Occasionally we stray from even the best of plans. Use the situation as a learning tool and withhold self-criticism or judgment. What happened that day? How did you feel? Keep track of the circumstances and your reaction in your journal. This can help you thoughtfully and intentionally overcome future challenges.

3. Talk to your doctor and/or therapist when needed. Health is a continuum, so there may be times when you need to seek help from your doctor, especially if you experience any sudden health changes or anything changes for the worse. Sometimes mental or physical issues may arise that are beyond your control. Seeking support from a therapist or doctor in these situations is always a good idea. It doesn’t mean you have to stop following your plan; it just means that you may need some additional help or guidance.

4. Pace yourself. Adopting a new eating plan is best when done in a holistic way, but the reality may be that you are not ready to take on all the challenges at once. Some people experience more success with slow and gradual change. Others will do best tackling everything at once. Just remember, our microbiomes are all different, and you know yourself best. Whatever you do, don’t add stress to the process by taking on too much. If you need to pace yourself, make a plan and be as consistent as you can.

5. Listen to your body. Paying close attention to your body’s cues is more important than following any dietary or lifestyle guidelines. For example, you may be at your best after nine hours of sleep instead of seven or eight. You also may have unique sensitivities. If you know that certain foods are triggers for you, make sure to choose healthy, enjoyable alternatives. Over time, as your body heals, you can try reintroducing foods that cause sensitivities, and you may find that you tolerate them better.

6. Use the recipes in part 3 of this book. The recipes in this book can be part of your gut health routine from now on. These recipes are the building blocks of your new lifestyle. You will find many adaptations and tips that will help you tailor them to your specific needs. Keep in mind, these are designed to be not only healthy but also tasty!
